Strive, Achieve, Excel; Believe in a Limitless Future.
As a school, we have evaluated the gaps in learning for Science due to periods of Home Learning due to Covid-19.
For the learning that was missed or not fully covered, Year Group Leaders and the Subject Leader have formulated a Recovery Plan.
The objectives will be addressed at various points in the coming academic years, either before or alongside the intended objectives, and will be monitored by the Subject Leader to address whether further adjustments need to be made to each year groups planning overview.
Did you know that there are as many stars in the solar system as there are grains of sand on the earth or that we share 55% of our DNA with a banana? Did you know that the Sun is large enough to hold about one million Earths or that if you took all of the blood vessels out of an average child, and laid them out in one line, the line would be over 60,000 miles long? Science generates facts like these that amaze and motivate children and it allows us to develop their sense of natural wonder about the world we live in. It is a great platform for learning. Science is everywhere!
Our curriculum at Lainesmead is enquiry based. It aims to enable children to learn the scientific skills they need to be super scientists. The development of these key science skills is at the heart of each new topic; this allows teachers to respond to the natural curiosity of children and enables the children to learn and to develop their scientific knowledge in a fun and engaging way.
The knowledge taught relates to the key national curriculum areas of Life Processes and Living Things, Materials and their Properties and Physical Processes. As they progress through school, children will become more proficient in selecting and using scientific equipment, at collating and presenting results and they will become increasingly confident in their ability to draw conclusions based on real evidence. In the context of science, children are encouraged to use and apply skills learnt in other curricular areas; they use and apply skills learnt in Numeracy, Literacy PHSE and ICT. Each year we celebrate science at Lainesmead by holding a Science Week.
These weeks allow children to further develop their skills and to learn that science has a place in the world of work – the world beyond Lainesmead. One of our most successful recent science weeks involved the children learning more about the Blood Hound Project. A project which aims to break the land speed record. To enrich the science curriculum further, the school has links with Bath University and our gifted scientists in years 5 and 6 get to work with their engineering and science departments. We also work closely with Churchfields to provide the children with enriching experiences in their science labs. Children will also participate in science trips to museums like @Bristol and Techniquest, Cardiff. Science learning takes place in and out of the classroom.
