Geography is the study of the shape and features of the Earth's surface, including countries, vegetation, climates and how humans use the world's resources. At Lainesmead, we have tailored our curriculum to suit the needs of our children and believe that Geography should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We believe that Geography enables children to celebrate differences as well as similarities, learn about the location around us and the ever changing world we live in today.

 

Geography education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils as well as enabling them to become global citizens and prepare them for the future. As pupils progress, they should be able to develop a knowledge of their local area as well as the wider world and understand how and why the world around us is changing. They should also know about human and physical aspects of the subject and be able to read and use a range of maps with confidence. 

 

EYFS – The new EYFS Framework covers Geography in two Early Learning Goals - People, Culture and Communities and The Natural World. These are covered by:

  • Using stories, non-fiction and maps that are specifically referenced.
  • Knowing some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities.
  • Explaining some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries drawing on knowledge from stories, non-fiction texts and when appropriate maps.
  • Exploring the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
  • Knowing some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments.
  • Understanding some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

 

Key Stage 1 & 2 - The national curriculum for Geography aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
  • understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
  • are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
    • collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
    • interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
    • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length

 

Geography learning is recorded in the children’s Topic books. Each lesson is identified with the subject heading of Geography and an ‘I can’ statement sticker that is taken from each year groups Topic Organiser. Each I can statement is a small step towards the children achieving an overarching goal for the subject, which again are found in red on the Topic Organisers. These ‘I can’ statements are then highlighted in the children’s books and the attainment is then recorded on the foundation subject assessment grid. At the end of the year, the subject leader and curriculum leader analyse the data and provide feedback in order to inform and improve future practice.
