Helping at Home and Homework

Helping at home and homework

At Lainesmead, we know that strong home–school partnerships make the biggest difference.

Our homework approach is simple, consistent and purposeful.

We focus on what has the greatest impact:

  • Regular reading
  • Short, frequent maths practice

Small daily habits build long-term success.

📚 Reading – 5 times a week

All children are expected to read at home at least five times each week.

Record reading in the reading log
Read little and often
Celebrate progress in class

Frequent reading builds vocabulary, fluency and confidence across the curriculum.

🎥 Supporting reading at home

We have created three short videos to help you support your child confidently at home.

We strongly encourage all parents and carers to watch them:

Supporting Reading at Home : How reading is taught and how to ask helpful questions.

Book Introductions : How we build understanding and fluency.

Good Reading Habits : Creating routines and encouraging independence.

Just a few minutes watching these can make a real difference.

DoodleMaths & DoodleTables

Children should aim to stay in the green zone for:

  • DoodleMaths
  • DoodleTables (where appropriate)

Teachers check daily
Effort is celebrated in class
Weekly assembly celebration for the top class

Staying in the green zone shows consistent practice and builds maths fluency.

Keeping homework manageable

To reduce screen fatigue, Doodle English and Doodle Spelling are no longer part of homework.

Spelling is taught in school, and termly lists are shared so children can practise in ways that suit them.

If Homework becomes difficult

If your child is struggling:

  • Speak to the class teacher
  • We will offer support
  • We will work together to remove barriers

Our approach is supportive, not punitive. We want children to feel confident and successful.

Working together

Clear expectations.
Daily routines.
Positive celebration.

By working together, we help children build strong learning habits that last.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the school office.
