‘People without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture are like trees without roots’ Marcus Garvey

History is the study of the past. It should help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. At Lainesmead, we have tailored our curriculum to suit the needs of our children and believe that History should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the past that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We believe that History enables children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time

EYFS – The new EYFS Framework covers History in the Past and Present Early Learning Goal.

This is covered by:

  • Making it separate from previously.
  • Not just tagged into people and communities
  • Inclusion of the understanding of the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and during storytelling.

Key Stage 1 & 2 - The national curriculum for History aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative, from the earliest times to the present day: how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.
  • Know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world: the nature of ancient civilisations; the expansion and dissolution of empires; characteristic features of past non-European societies; achievements and follies of mankind.
  • Gain and deploy a historically grounded understanding of abstract terms such as ‘empire’, ‘civilisation’, ‘parliament’ and ‘peasantry’.
  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and use them to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends, frame historically-valid questions and create their own structured accounts, including written narratives and analyses.
  • Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed

History learning is recorded in the children’s Topic books. Each lesson is identified with the subject heading of History and an ‘I can’ statement sticker that is taken from each year groups Topic Organiser. Each I can statement is a small step towards the children achieving an overarching goal for the subject which again is found in red on the Topic Organisers. These ‘I can’ statements are then highlighted in the children’s books and the attainment is then recorded on the foundation subject assessment grid. At the end of the year, the subject leader and curriculum leader analyse the data and provide feedback in order to inform and improve future practice.

History Statement

As a school we have evaluated the gaps in learning for History due to lockdowns and Covid.

For the learning that was missed or not fully covered please see the relevant topic organiser:

Current Year 6 children – Year 5 Term 2 and Term 3

Current Year 5 – Year 4 Term 3

Current Year 4 – Year 3 Term 3

Current Year 3 – Year 2 Term 3

Current Year 2 – Year 1 Term 3

Current Year 1 – No gaps identified due to the repetitive nature of the EYFS curriculum.

(Click on term and it is linked to take you to that terms organiser!)

These gaps have been identified are already within the subsequent year’s curriculum; therefore, ensuring that all the necessary components are in place for future learning.
