Phonics

At Lainesmead, we teach phonics using the Song of Sounds programme—a dynamic and engaging approach that supports early reading and writing. We have chosen Song of Sounds because it suits all learners, offering a multisensory experience that includes a catchy song, visual images, and physical actions to reinforce learning and aid memory.

At Lainesmead, children take part in two phonics sessions each day: one structured lesson following the Song of Sounds scheme, and a second session focused on applying their phonics skills through targeted reading and writing booklets. In addition to these lessons, phonics is embedded across the curriculum and taught daily during whole-class and guided reading sessions, as well as through shared and modelled writing activities. Our classrooms are equipped with accessible resources to support independent learning, including phonics displays and phonic mats on tables to reinforce key sounds and spelling patterns.

We also recognise the vital role parents play in supporting phonics development. Throughout the year, we offer workshops to help parents understand how phonics is taught and how they can support learning at home. Families are invited to come into school to watch phonics sessions and take part in fun, interactive games with their children—building confidence and reinforcing learning in a playful, supportive way.
