Strive, Achieve, Excel; Believe in a Limitless Future.
At Lainesmead Primary School, the intention of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is to develop an interest and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. We aim to build the child's 'culture capital' so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures. We hope to lay the foundations for future learning by preparing our children with the basics of the French language in readiness for their transition to secondary school, where they will continue with their MFL journey.
Our MFL curriculum has been designed to progressively develop skills in French. We are currently using lessons developed by teachers from a local secondary school. These ensure children acquire a bank of vocabulary around organised and sequenced topics. They ensure development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge from units already studied.
All children in KS2 are taught French in two blocks throughout the Year. This is delivered by the class teacher or a HLTA. We also focus on languages throughout the year and in KS1 that link with our class countries.
Our children will transition to their respective secondary schools ready to build on their basic knowledge of the French language and other Modern Foreign Languages that they have experienced. They will understand cultures, customs, celebrations, food, and landmarks. We hope that their learning about France and other countries and cultures will create a desire to travel beyond their local community and experience other countries and cultures around the world.
