Phonics

As a school, we have evaluated the gaps in learning in Phonics, due to lockdowns and COVID.

These gaps have been identified and are already being covered in the following terms and revisited often throughout the year’s curriculum, therefore ensuring that all the necessary components are in place for future learning. Teachers have a highlighted scheme which identifies which phonics were covered during lockdowns, which potentially need re-visiting in class.

All children are assessed regularly and lessons are planned to ensure any gaps in phonic knowledge. Teachers in KS1 have two sessions a day of phonics, one to cover new learning and one focussing on any identified areas that children are missing. This will ensure all children have quality first teaching of phonics needed to progress in their reading and writing.
