End of Year Newsletter

END 0F YEAR NEWS

As we come to the end of this academic year, it is with great pride that I can look back at the many achievements of the children. They have worked so hard and with every changing demands made on us by a new and challenging curriculum. The many values that have been on display throughout the year have particularly come to the fore as we end the term – resilience when tackling a particularly tricky problem whether it is in class or a problem between friends; courage in coping with changes; love and honesty towards all members of the school community; appreciation and happiness for each other and all the opportunities they are given within the school – which all strengthen their character and their ability to make the most of every aspect of school life.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their hard work this year.  It has been a year of changes and they have embraced this with goodwill and continued to provide the best education for the children.
I would also like to thank all parents and carers for their support this year.  A great deal of what we do in school cannot be achieved without you and your co-operation and backing. Many thanks and we look forward to working more closely with you from September.
Finally, I would like to wish all children who are leaving us at the end of this academic year all the very best on their journey. I know that they have all had a great start here at Lainesmead and know that they will go on to achieve great things in the future.

SUMMER FETE

Thank you to everyone who attended the fete on July 4th.  We have had so many positive comments regarding the event’s success.  We are pleased to inform you that we managed to raise an amazing £1552.45. An awful lots of hard work goes into organising and running such a successful fete and we have many people to thank.
Firstly, a huge “Thank You” to Mrs Peer for all of her efforts, supporting the Class Reps and for organising everything so that it ran smoothly.
Secondly, to all of the Class Reps: Andi, Angela, Bibi, Chelsea, Erica, Jo, Joanne, Kelly, Leighton, Rachel, Stacey and Sven for all of their hard work and dedication helping to prepare and organise the prizes, and stalls. We really couldn’t have done any of this without you!
We also have many organisations, shops and individuals to thank, as follows: Argos; Bath Road Methodist Church; Homebase; Krispy Kreme; Sweets Galore; Wanborough Carnival; Churchfields staff and pupils; School Council; Year 6 helpers; Mr and Mrs Arora; Mr Baylay; Mrs Beauchamp; Mr T.Clarke; Mr L.De-Sciscio; Mr Durant; Mrs Mann; Mrs Newton; Mr T. Newton; Mrs J. Nicholls; Mr Peer; Mrs Timbrell; Mrs Voulgaris; Mr J.Wolf. Without all their help and dedication, as well as the help of all of Lainesmead’s staff, the event could not possibly have been as successful as it was.  Many thanks once again for your continued support.

PRIDE OF LAINESMEAD AWARDS

It was a pleasure to host the Pride of Lainesmead Awards on Thursday 14th July.
The annual event, previously known as Lainescars, has become such an important part of celebrating the children’s successes and once again it was wonderful to see so many children nominated.  Those who achieved a crystal were chosen for so many reasons but I can say that every child was a winner – having shown such determination and perseverance in their area, be it through achieving the leadership award or through their skills in numeracy.  Well done to all nominees who were given a star in assembly, the nominees on the night and the eventual crystal winners.  You are all worthy of high praise!

Monday 5th September – First day of Term 1 for all children
Friday 9th September – Non-school uniform day (£1) – dress as your favourite sporting star/sport from the Olympics.
Monday 12th September – Grand Opening of the Lainesmead Primary School Nursery Class
Tuesday 13th September – Year 3 Royal Ballet Workshops begin
Thursday 15th September – 3:30 and 4pm – Meet the Teacher – see details below
Wednesday 19th October – International Primary Curriculum Fabulous Finish Afternoon (Years 1 – 6).
             2:15pm – Year 2 assembly – starting with a 15 minute presentation on
                          E-Safety (please note that these are different to last year’s)
             2:30pm – Years 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Fabulous Finish afternoon begins

ATTENDANCE

We continue to focus on improving attendance in the school and I am delighted that our attendance at the end of term is 95.83%, slightly above the Government’s target of school attendance.
Many classes have celebrated their attendance successes this term and we are looking forward to celebrating the attendance of all those who have achieved 100% in the final assembly on Friday.

INFANTS MUSIC FESTIVAL AT THE WYVERN

It was with great pleasure that I attended, along with one of the school Governors – Reverand Norma McKemey – the Infants Music Festival at the Wyvern Theatre on Wednesday 13th July.  The choir looked fantastic in their red waistocoats and Union Flag accessories and sang their songs with great gusto.  All of the songs linked to being champions and very much anticipated Team GB’s successes in the forthcoming Rio Olympics.
Well done to all children who took part and many thanks to the adults who invested their time in supporting the choir.

Grand opening of Swindon’s Newest Station! Sunday 31st July at 12pm (lunchtime) at Richard Jefferies Museum Coate Water.

Think Railway Children, flags and bunting! We would like you to join us at the Richard Jefferies Museum for the grand opening of the Richard Jefferies Halt and the opening of the Coate Water Miniature Railway’s brand new extension.
This family day will see the first official train stop at the new station with a ribbon cutting and an unveiling of the new sign to mark the official opening of “Richard Jefferies Halt”. Children’s activities at the museum, a brass band and a steam traction engine to keep you entertained. The museum is situated on the edge of the beautiful Coate Water County Park which houses the miniature railway and it’s just 2 minutes from the Arkells Brewery Sun Inn family pub. A corner of Swindon perfect for families – Come along to the museum and bring a picnic and what’s more it’s FREE!

MEET THE TEACHERS’ MEETINGS

On Thursday 15th September we will be running our yearly ‘Meet the Teacher Meetings.’
This will be an opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher and learn about the expectations of the new year group.  We will be running these as 2 workshops in September, one at 3:30pm and one at 4:00pm, giving parents an opportunity to move between classes more easily, without missing any vital information.
As a response to suggestions made on parent questionnaires, we will focus the workshops on the teaching of maths, and in particular the types of written methods used in each year group, and the homework expectations.
This is a vital opportunity for all parents to be informed of the expectations of the new national curriculum and the way maths teaching has adapted as a result.

NON-SCHOOL UNIFORM DAY – FRIDAY 9TH SEPTEMBERget set road to rio
As stated in the dates above, Friday 9th September will be our first non-school uniform day of the year. We would like the children to take inspiration from the Rio Olympics and dress as one of their sporting heroes from this event. They can dress as the athlete or to represent the sport that has inspired them! All money raised will go towards outside play equipment for the children.
